News for Sunday, November 24, 2024 - Christ the king

Well, here we are, almost at the end of November, with only 33 shopping days until Christmas. It used to be less, but, of course, now they're all shopping days; so, I suppose it's just 33 days until Christmas! I know that's a full month and change, but it seems to come awfully fast. What with the Sunday after this being the First Sunday of Advent and December 1, I feel a little like Morley in Stuart McLean's famous short story, "Dave Cooks the Turkey"—like I'm in a train barreling down the track towards Christmas, doing a hundred different things at once. Which is why this Sunday is one I always look forward to. We call it "Christ the King Sunday." It's that pause we take, before being wrapped up in the wonderful, but oh so busy, story of the birth of the Messiah.

On this Sunday, not only do we mark the end of the liturgical year, we also proclaim the sovereignty of Christ over all; his authority transcends earthly powers and kingdoms. We witness our allegiance to him, knowing we are his people and live in his sovereign care. In essence, Christ the King Sunday is a celebration of Christ's ultimate authority and a call to live in faithful obedience to Him.

As we prepare to enter the Advent season, let us do so with hearts full of gratitude and anticipation. Let us remember that Christ is the King of kings and Lord of lords, and His reign will have no end.
